About the Author

Dr Rita Chowdhury is an internationally acclaimed luminary of Indian Literature. She was born in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh and grown up in places across Assam. Her first novel, Abirata Jatra, was published in 1981 during the Assam Movement, in which Dr. Rita Chowdhury was actively involved and at the forefront. With a rich literary oeuvre of Eighteen novels, five anthologies of poetry, one memoir and a short story, she has established herself as a crucial voice in contemporary Literature and society. Themes such as cultural identity, complexities of human relationships, historical events recurringly spun into her narratives. She meticulously explores truth through creative non-fiction where real events unfold with narrative depth and storytelling. Through her narrative, she becomes the voice of the voiceless. The silent beings, the subaltern lives and the muted tribes and so on emerge into life with the voice she brings. She reimagines history that brings forth the unspoken stories that have long waited quietly and patiently, to be told and heard. Since the 1980s, she has been in the forefront while relentlessly working for the protection of the indigenous tribal communities and for their advancement. She aspires to see the world illuminating into full potential, empowered by the wisdom it holds within. Her writings have carved a distinguished niche within the syllabus of Higher Education of Assam, reinforcing the enduring relevance of her visionary work. She received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2008 for her novel Deo Langkhui, which is based on the Tiwa community of Assam. Though her pen and her might, Dr. Rita Chowdhury continues to give voice to the voiceless and inspire generations through her literary and social vision.
